See ski passes already on sale for 2024/25

I can’t believe it’s already that time of year to decide on ski passes for the 2023/24 season. Next season will be our sixth on the road and we’ve visited dozens of resorts using Brundage, Loveland (with Powder Alliance), and Indy Passes since we started RV and van life. We’re excited to continue discovering mountains that aren’t on most people’s radars.

Below are our pass recommendations for a van life winter road trip across the North American West during the 2023/24 season. They are provided in the order in which they were announced. (Sorry, but we’ve excluded information about road-tripping the Midwest and East as we haven’t traveled there yet.) We’ll keep updating this page as passes go on sale.

If you choose to purchase a pass at a ski area that is not close to your home, be sure to find out how you can pick up your physical pass or if it can be mailed to you.

You may only be able to use reciprocal partner benefits when your home mountain is operating for the winter season, not before or after. We suggest verifying the rules with your home mountain.

When redeeming partner benefits, additional purchases may apply such as lodging, an RFID card, etc. Lodging requirements are rare and noted wherever possible. We’ve never paid more than $5 for an RFID card, but we recommend contacting partner mountains for more information.

Advance reservations may be required for ski area parking or lift passes.

Silverton Mountain

Silverton Mountain was the first ski area to announce their season pass with a partner resort add-on for next season. An email went out on February 6th announcing their excitement for a second chairlift that could be installed as early as this summer. That second chairlift is one of three lifts that were included in the plan when Silverton was originally permitted.

If you’re not familiar with Silverton Mountain, they are one of the most unique ski areas in the country. Their 1,819 acres of terrain is for advanced and expert level skiers and riders only. There are no groomers and no cut runs accessible from their single chairlift. It’s backcountry skiing without the uphill effort, unless you want to hike to their peak at 13,487 feet, the highest of any ski area in North America. While Silverton performs avalanche mitigation, carrying avy gear is required. You can book a guide or tackle the mountain unguided. Plus, they offer affordable heli skiing.

If you don’t live in the area, you can sleep overnight along the road leading to Silverton as long as snow removal operations aren’t taking place. Otherwise, an RV park in Durango will be your best bet.

What You Get with Silverton’s Unguided Season Base Pass + Premium Pass Upgrade

Purchase the Silverton Unguided Season Base Pass and get unguided access to the mountain Wednesday through Sunday starting March 13th through April 14th in 2024. (These dates are projected dates and subject to change.) Also, if you’ve always wanted to go heli skiing but thought it was out of reach due to cost, you can purchase one $39 heli run during the 2024 season with this pass. (Heli run price increases to $59 on May 31, 2023. See Silverton’s website for more information about heli runs.) The Base Pass does not include partner mountain benefits, but you can add the Premium Pass Upgrade to make this pass perfect for a van life road trip.

It will make the most sense to buy a season pass at a Powder Alliance mountain that you anticipate spending the most time skiing or riding. Likely, it will be closest to your sticks-and-bricks home.

However, suppose you are a full-time van lifer or otherwise have the flexibility to choose any home mountain. Some Powder Alliance resorts have relationships with other ski areas in addition to Powder Alliance, giving you even more free or discounted days of skiing and riding. See below. Our personal favorites season passes are Loveland and Bogus Basin because they both participate in Powder Alliance and have numerous other partner relationships. Bogus Basin also participates in the Freedom Pass.

Snow King is another good one because they participate in Powder Alliance and Indy Pass, and they partner with several other ski areas.

Powder Alliance is Best for

Sampling hidden gems in almost every state in the West. A handful of these resorts have appeared on the top ten lists for most snowfall and/or deepest snowpack throughout the 2022/23 season.

Monarch Mountain

Monarch Mountain isn’t part of Epic, Ikon, Indy, Power Pass, Powder Alliance, or Freedom Pass, but they have an excellent number of resort partnerships making them a solid option for a road trip. This independent ski area is located in the Pike San Isabel National Forest near Salida, Colorado with 670 acres of lift-accessed terrain, 130 acres of hikeable terrain, and 1,635 acres of guided backcountry. If you don’t live in the area but want to spend some time at Monarch in your RV, Salida / Mt. Shavano KOA Journey and Salida RV Resort are open year-round and only 15 minutes and 30 minutes away respectively.

Indy Pass

Indy offers two major pass types: Indy+ Pass and Indy Base Pass. Indy+ has no blackout dates, whereas the Indy Base Pass does.

Indy Pass is one of our favorites for a van life road trip. 21 ski areas in the West and Rockies regions currently allow overnight RV camping (asterisked below).

If you have to stay at a nearby RV park, pricing is typically reasonable, and space is generally available. You don’t have to do too much planning ahead.

Changes to Indy Pass Sales for the 2023/24 Season

Participating Indy resorts saw an increase in visitation during the 2022/23 season. To maintain the uncrowded experience Indy pass holders love, Indy is limiting pass sales for the 2023/24 season. Returning Indy pass holders will have the first shot at purchasing an Indy Pass between March 6th and March 21st. If you join Indy’s waitlist, you’ll have a chance to purchase a 2023/24 pass between March 24th and March 30th. Sales will open up to the general public on April 1st. Pricing for those on the waitlist and the general public will be announced before their respective on-sale dates.

Epic

Epic offers several different pass options and is one of the most popular multi-resort passes out there next to Ikon. It’s great if you want to visit multiple bucket-list worthy resorts. However, only two Epic resorts allow overnight RV camping in the West – Stevens Pass and Fernie (asterisked above). Spots sell out quickly at Stevens Pass, and Fernie only permits you to stay with a full-season commitment. No nightlies!

RV park accommodations can be found close to the other resorts, but I strongly recommend making reservations in advance. Don’t expect it to be easy winging it from place to place, especially if Epic mountains are receiving decent snowfall. RV parks in Epic destinations are the most expensive in the West.

Ikon offers a few different pass options and their portfolio includes some of the top bucket-list-worthy resorts in the US and Canada, just like Epic.

A handful of Ikon resorts allow overnight RV camping in the West (asterisked below), but not many more than Epic. It should be noted that Winter Park doesn’t generally permit overnight camping, but exceptions can be made per their website. Also, Revelstoke allows one night only!

RV park accommodations are typically close to Ikon resorts, but reservations are definitely recommended and you should expect steep nightly rates. The most expensive we’ve seen exceeded over $100 per night!

Ski California Gold Pass is Best for

A California road trip, obviously. Though, only a small handful allow overnight RV camping (asterisked above).

If you want to park it in Lake Tahoe for the winter, this is also a great option instead of purchasing a combination of other multi-resort passes and day tickets. There are several RV parks and campgrounds open in the Tahoe basin and greater region year-round, so you can move around as you ski different mountains around the lake. The list includes:

The only ski area in the Tahoe region missing from the Ski California Gold Pass is Donner Ski Ranch. However, during the 2022/23 season, you could ride for $59 if you went on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday after January 10th and excluding days during Presidents’ Day week.

Anticipated Passes

Below are passes we expect to go on sale for the 2023/24 season and what we know about what they offered for 2022/23.

Ski Cooper (Ages 15-74) – Ski Cooper in Colorado offered passes for the 2022/23 season with 184 bonus days at partner resorts, several of which are connected to Cooper via the Freedom Pass. Their early bird price was only $329 for ages 15-74. Their 2023/24 pass will go on sale July 1st and pricing will be announced in May. Check out their current pass partners here.

Summary

We hope we’ve introduced you to compelling pass choices you’ve never heard of before as you plan your van life road trip. Epic, Ikon, and Mountain Collective hold some of the most well-known ski resorts with incredible terrain, luxurious amenities, and the best snow on earth. While Indy, Power Pass, Powder Alliance, and Freedom Pass will take you to undiscovered ski towns, less-crowded trails with fresh lines all day, and more options for sleeping in your van slope side. If you have the budget, buy more than one pass for the most flexibility as you tour the North American West.

For 2023/24, we’re personally eyeing a ski resort with Freedom Pass benefits. More on that when they announce their season pass sale. And since Indy Pass looks to be limiting sales for the 2023/24 season, we’ll buy another as returning pass holders so we don’t miss out.
