Winter Van Life: Sugar Bowl

Time of Our Visit: December 2019

For years living in Lake Tahoe, I wanted to ride Sugar Bowl. We heard they were less crowded on a powder day than other Tahoe area resorts. But Sugar Bowl was at least 90 minutes one-way from our place in the South Shore. That time doesn’t account for traffic and snowy roads either. On powder days, it was more convenient to stick to Heavenly, minutes from our front door.

It wasn’t until we left Tahoe after 20 years that riding Sugar Bowl became possible when we bought Loveland season passes. Both Loveland and Sugar Bowl participated in the Powder Alliance. (Sugar Bowl is no longer part of Powder Alliance and joined Mountain Collective starting with the 2022/23 season.)

We kicked off our 2019/20 winter season at Sugar Bowl when we stayed a week in the region on our way to Idaho. While not all of their terrain was open because it was early December, coverage was still decent. We could see the exploration potential for a future visit.

A storm came through in time for our second day. It was weird to ski a Tahoe resort on a powder day where lift lines were non-existent, and I could take some runs without seeing anybody.

The runs accessible from Disney Express were my favorite considering the early season conditions. However, I suspect when there is better coverage, I’d probably enjoy Mt. Lincoln Express.

Hopefully, when we visit again, we can plan to be there in the middle of the season when the base depth is deeper for exploring all corners of the mountain.

Driving to Sugar Bowl

I like to take Donner Pass Road from Truckee because of the scenery. It is the fastest route coming from that direction anyway and recommended by Sugar Bowl. It passes Donner Lake before a steep, windy climb over the summit to Sugar Bowl’s turn off after a few miles. For a stunning photo, stop at the parking lot for the Donner Summit Bridge on your left.

The slower alternate is to take I-80 west to exit 174 to the other end of Donner Pass Road.

All roads that lead to Sugar Bowl can close during winter storm events. Check with Sugar Bowl directly for the best way to get there during stormy weather.

Also, I-80 and the Truckee area can have horrendous traffic. Think hours stuck in your vehicle. Much of this traffic is related to nearby Palisades Tahoe and Northstar ski resorts and is made worse on powder days and during holiday periods and weekends. As much as possible avoid traveling on Friday and Sunday when San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento area traffic is arriving in Tahoe and returning home. While I’ve provided driving times throughout this guide, those times are the best case scenario.

Parking at Sugar Bowl

We parked in a flat, sunny spot near the Mt. Judah Lodge and closest to the Judah Kids Teaching Area. The spot we found wasn’t any further than some of the paid preferred parking. The parking did not fill up, but it was very early in the season.

See Sugar Bowl’s Directions & Parking page for all parking options.

Using Your Mountain Collective Pass at Sugar Bowl

See Sugar Bowl’s Mountain Collective page for instructions. I’m unsure what the experience will be now that Sugar Bowl is part of Mountain Collective. However, when they were part of Powder Alliance, we had to provide more personal information than any other ski area we’ve visited. We also had to sign a release of liability waiver.

Where to Sleep in Your Van/RV

When I inquired at Guest Services about overnight RV camping in December 2019, it was not allowed.

Coachland RV Resort – 25 minutes in Truckee

Reno KOA Journey at Boomtown – 45 minutes in Verdi, NV

Overnight parking is not allowed at the Donner Summit Sno-Park.

Working Remotely

Texting, emailing, and streaming entertainment worked great for me in the Main Lodge at Sugar Bowl and Coachland RV Resort using AT&T. However, we were in the area when ski season wasn’t in full swing yet. An increase in network traffic, particularly on weekends and holidays, could affect your experience.

If you’re looking for a co-working space, Truckee has a few options, including The Lounge at 5817′ and Lift Truckee. Lift has two locations in town – Airport Building on Truckee Airport Road and Business Park Annex on Business Park Drive.

Conveniences Near Sugar Bowl

Truckee should have much of what you might need. Otherwise, the Sacramento area west of Sugar Bowl (80 minutes to Roseville) and Reno, Nevada (50 minutes) in the east on I-80 will have the most options.

For groceries, we like Safeway (Donner Pass Rd) since we can earn fuel points. It is 20 minutes from Sugar Bowl in Truckee. This store can get very busy. If you have a rig longer than 21 feet, you may have trouble getting into and back out of the parking lot.

If you drive a Sprinter van, Mercedes-Benz of Reno in Nevada can service Sprinters. They are an hour from Sugar Bowl.

Where to Eat Near Sugar Bowl

I like to recommend Historic Downtown Truckee for dining, shopping, and window browsing, only 20 minutes from Sugar Bowl.

Our personal favorites are Burger Me for cheeseburgers, Squeeze In for breakfast, and Pianeta Ristorante for dinner. We ate at Pianeta on our wedding night. You can book reservations here.

Be prepared for a wait visiting most food establishments in Truckee. Make reservations wherever possible.

For information on parking in downtown Truckee, go to the Truckee Police website. If you have a rig longer than 21 feet, you might have trouble finding parking.

If you want to try eats outside of downtown, we like Blue Coyote Bar & Grill for game nights and pizza and Full Belly Deli for sandwiches. Both are about 20 minutes from Sugar Bowl. If you happen to be staying at Coachland RV Resort, Full Belly Deli is less than a mile away.
